Hi everyone, just thought I'd post some of the quotes and ideas we discussed today. William Lloyd Garrison's quote was in the lecture slides but I'll post it anyway so you don't have to trawl through blackboard to find it " I will not equivocate- I will not excuse- I will not retreat a single inch- AND I WILL BE HEARD". Also another one I picked up in theatre studies but I think is still relevant is "Unlock your head! Open it to the demands of our time!" I thought this would be useful with our idea that abolition is progressive and will assist the US in becoming the superpower it was intended to become when the declaration of independence was signed (making links to the history of the US). Also I'm going to pull some quotes from the declaration of independence to see if we can use it to prove our point (all men are created equal, ideas of freedom ect.) Any issues shoot me an email (njgat1@..) or post it here and I'll get back to you Have a great week and I'll see you next Tuesday. Natasha xo
Hi everyone I wrote a long message before and it got deleted :( now very disheartened by essentially it said that let me know if I can help any group with their respective areas. Also everyone's email addresses are as follows:
In order to prepare for the convention, I am writing the speeches for two of the presenters. In particular I will be focusing on the role of religion and appeals to morality in order to persuade the other convention participants that our approach is the right one. After consulting with the researchers, I hope to have the speeches done by Sunday night.
I'm one of the presenters for Tuesday but have unfortunately been laid up with an intense case of the flu all week so missed the prep tute this past Tuesday- can someone give me a brief rundown of what was decided and also let me know if there's anything I can help with!
Hello all, I too was struck down early last week with a case of the flu and a stomach bug... also missing last week's tute... think it's going around. Needless to say, I just discovered that this conversation is running. If you haven't yet received my e-mail, I was/am a researcher, and have looked at abolition predominantly with regards women. I focussed on Sojourner Truth as an example of a female, slave and abolitionist... although I'm not entirely certain if she would qualify for a 'radical' abolitionist as such. It now being a little overdue, I'm really hoping that perhaps in some way some of this may still be useful... and if not, that I might be able to help out in some other way still. Sara.
P.s.... just as an aside... I wasn't assigned this 'topic' in the tute obviously, but kind of did it off my own bat, hence why I'm not sure if it will be useful or not... All the best! I'll at least be there cheering you on! Sara.
I am going to be one of the presenters on the day, I will be talking about religion. To prepare for the convention I have been reading some speeches from the time (online) to try and get a better feel for the way in which presenters of the time would have put their ideas forward.
I’m a researcher and have been looking at the role of women in the abolition movement. I have also found some information on the different policies/views of radical abolitionists had and how other groups reacted to these.
I've been researching the various religious abolitionists, contrasting the difference in approach between John Brown and non-violent Christian humanitarians, and hoping to distinguish which would be more useful or applicable to our cause. I'm planning on emailing relevant quotes and possibly statistics to the writers.
I'm one of the presenters and will be covering the female radical abolitionist perspective. At first (I believe it was Emily and I) who put forward the idea, that we could provide a strong feminist perspective VS a more meek and virtuous female perspective of the time; however our roles were divided into the female and religious sections. In order to prepare for it I have been researching various female abolitionists. When I receive my part of the speech I hope to provide input for the similar voice and attitudes of the women.
I'm one of the sign makers and Sarah and I met today to finalise what we would be doing and evenly distribute the work. I will be making three posters with one quote on each. Using Natasha's and Liam's suggestions, I will be using the following quotes: 1. "I will not equivocate- I will not excuse- I will not retreat a single inch- AND I WILL BE HEARD". 2. "All men are created equal" 3. "Free the slaves now"
As one of the sign makers, I will be making 5 signs,a union flag, a confederate flag, the constitution,a slogan for the female anti-slavery society and the the quote "unlock your head!open it to the demands of our time!"I have chosen to use black cardboard paper as a background border to stick A3 white paper onto. In keeping with the black and white theme, the quotes/slogans will also be in black and white. This is in line with period black and white signs of the time period and the words will also be written in an 1850's/60's style like some of the images in the reader and lecture slides etc. My fellow sign maker Cora will also be following this black and white theme.
Just want to add a few important notes: as this convention is being held just after the first shots have been fired at Fort Sumter on April 12,1861, I am making the 'national' union flag and the first 'national' confederate flag that lasted between March 4 and May 21,1861. For the constitution (as on of the presenters wants to rip it up),I am doing Constitution of the Confederate States of America March 11,1861. For the female anti slavery society I am doing a quote from a free black woman,Maria.Miller W.Stewart, which also in line with religious views held by the radical abolitionists;"the cause of God and the cause of freedom."
I have been researching the economic benefits of Abolition. I have looked at the costs associated with slave labour for the slave owners and then contrasted them with the economic benefits of a free labour system. I have emailed my research to the writers.
I am a researcher and I have been exploring the religious views on slavery. Particular areas I have focused upon are patterns of immigration for religious groups and how they have influenced and supported an abolitionist standpoint in the North. I have also looked at individual Christian passages on slavery which would have been used to skew public opinion on the matter.
I am a negotiator and have been thinking over arguments and possible alliances with other groups and what could be used to convince them. However I think most of my work shall be done tomorrow.
